Overview

One of the best recommended Cusco tours are Red Valley and Rainbow Mountain, during the journey you will be impressed to see unique landscapes, such as llamas, snow-capped peaks, red mountains, Andean houses, camel herders, an adventure that is definitely worth doing, once at the top you will be perplexed by the colors of the Vinicunca mountain, on the side you will see part of the red valley and if you turn around you will see the giant Ausangate (6,385 m.a.s.l.) the highest mountain in Cusco, the Vinicunca mountain is a product of the formation of the Andes. It is assumed that the Andes began to form about 120 million years ago when the Nazca tectonic plate slid under the continental shelf of South America, in a process called “subduction”, creating mountains and lifting marine sediments up to (5035 m.a.s.l). The marine sediment is presented in the form of layers, the layers contain minerals that over time oxidized creating a diversity of colors similar to those of the rainbow.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Rainbow Mountain - Red Valley - Cusco: 240 km / 5h riding

This day we must start the tour early at 6:00 am to then make a 1.30 hour trip to Cusipata (3500 m.a.s.l) where we will have a delicious breakfast and then continue along a dirt road bordering the river until we reach to Pilpinto (3550 m.a.s.l. ) where to pay entrance 5 soles, after 20 more minutes we will arrive at Chilluani (3,900 m.a.s.l), there is a ticket control and we have to pay 20 soles, we follow the road to Pulapatahuasi (4600 m.a.s.l) where we will prepare to start the walk of approximately 2 hours uphill, here we can see beautiful landscapes with many snow-capped peaks, local people with typical clothes of the area and llama and alpaca breeders, in addition to the beautiful high Andean landscape of the Vilcanota mountain range, when we reach the top (5035 m.a.s.l.) we will have free time to take our photographs.

Then we will begin to descend this time through the Red Valley (optional), the name is due to the special pigmentation of the earth that has a reddish color, this path will be more special because we can be one of the only groups on this route, in the viewpoint we will pay 10 soles to the Laya family, the road will be 25 minutes round trip, then we will return to the parking lot, to continue with our motorcycles back to Cusipata where we will enjoy a comforting lunch, then we will follow the main road to Cusco, arriving approximately at 5:00 p.m., and this is how this great adventure ends.
